Gutting Doors in eg

Is there and easy was to remove side intrusion bars? This is for eg6 race car. And is it possible to remove the inner skin of the door and keep the stock window in without having to go with lexan, just has to stay in upright possition doesnt have to go up and down.

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

To get the bar out, you need to either drill the spot welds out at each end of the bar. These can be seen on the outside ends of the door. Or you can just cut the bar off at each end inside the door. Then either cut the rubber glue stuff, or run a thin piece of wire along and it should slice through it. You may find you have to cut the bar into 2 pieces to get it out of the door.

As for gutting the door. Yer you can do it. You would just need to find a way of holding the window up. Perhaps a bolt across under it, with a hefty chunk of rubber there to both hold it up, and stop it breaking.

You can actually gut quite alot of the inner skin and still retain moving windows. You just have to check what you cut out, before you cut it, an make sure its not part of the window attachment. Alot easier to just do the whole thing, and find a way of holding th window up.

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

sorry I didnt take any. I gutted them, removed side intrusion bar, put 1 dent into the drivers door, and lined it all back up with alloy skins.

Sorry pic is off phone.

Ill be interested in how you get on lexaning the rear window. Was thinking of doing this myself but have since been put off because of what the motorsport nz rules state.

Really? I was suprised how little weight i took out of them. However i can't remember how much the side intrusion bars weighed when they came out. Still though even just gutting them i reckon another 6 or 7kg came out of the car.

yeah but just go close a normal cars door, then close your own door, and youll see why you gutted yours, it really is lighter

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

As we all know on an eg hatch the rear window is its own seperate opening, if you wish to change a rear window (as james has said (and also what it states in msnz book) that the rear window needs to run metal strips vertically along it that bolts to both panels at either end of the window.

But it also says that you can use 5 mm polycarponate without the strips but I have been told that 5 mm poly will weigh a bit, so for know have just stayed with the origanel glass.

I don't want to run strips to bolt onto the body at both ends as it will elimanate the usage of the rear hatch and considering im about to put a new fuel cell in the back i need to be able to open the rear.

Hope that makes some sence, little hard to explain (well for me it is )

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

Oh and James I think you should check the weight of my civic doors out next season, so damned guttered I almost wasn't aloud to race at manfeild until i put a decent inner skin on it. Now aluminium but before was just that corrugated plastic sign stuff

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

Just have a pipe extended from your fuel cell and built into the plastic rear window Fast Fill ftw.

Oh and i was using core flute for my door skins to, but have found a new light weight and more sexy option haha

Yer, but you will find there are few motorsport events you can have a lexan front window for.

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

Oh ok. Um not a hell of alot, mayb a kg or 2. But it gives you better mounting options than glass, and also its prolly a bit safer. I will try work out what my new windows weigh, and compare them to the glass ones and let you know. Prolly be next week though.

Re: Gutting Doors in eg

its unfortant im not living near my car at the moment so i could give the total weight of my doors, Have the lexan and all.

And as for the fuel cell, looking at having 2 made up one for ss2000 and then one for the enduros so the side window filler may change but yeah was thinking of doing that anyway, more credits on the coolness race car look hahahaha.

Are you running different fuel cell or just factory one in your teg Jase??
