Wanna' get into motorsport?

Wanna' get into motorsport?

You can do some events without a competition licence, or even club membership (eg autocrosses and 1/4 miles). Have a look at what your local club offers and give it a go...
Here's all the recognised clubs - http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Contacts/clubcontacts.htm

If you want to do regular hill-climbs, sprints, or circuit racing you have to be a member of a recognised car club (which costs around $50 to $100 per year), and then apply for a competition licence from Motorsport NZ ( http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Pdf/A001.pdf ), which is another $50 to $100 or so, depending on what level licence you're appyling for.

A 'Clubsport' licence is fine for most club events (eg hill-climbs, sprints, rallysprint, etc) and, assuming you have no medical etc issues, it's pretty much just a matter of handing over cash for your licence. If you want to do circuit racing or propper rallying you need a special licence that is a lttle dearer and may involve a simple test or two.

Motorsport New Zealand is the governing body and there's heaps of info on their hard to navigate site - http://www.motorsport.org.nz .

Here's a good place for beginners to start - http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Pdf/get_started_book.pdf

What about my Car?

Equipment:

For basic event (eg autocross & motorkhana) all you need is:

-a car in WOF condition,
-some clean 100% cotton overalls,
-an approved motor-cycle helmet,
-and a current driver's licence

For 'Speed' events (hillclimbs, sprints, etc) you will need:

-to also fit an extingusher to your car.
-and a competition licence.

A few selected 'Speed' events also require a roll cage, but most don't as the idea is that these are entry level events.

As always there's helpful info at http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Pdf/get_started_book.pdf .

Yeah this is very easy to do, fit a fire extingusher held with metal bracket and two 6mm bolts and your done. Fill the form for a clubsport liecense and your done

.
Really? All the Autocross i have done, all you need is a car (one car was trailored there and didnt have a WOF but was probably WOFable) and that was it. I was wearing shorts and T shirt with no helmet, you could be any age at all ( i did it as young as 14 but saw kids about 7 years old) and you didnt even have to wear your seatbelt ( i did though).

All the other info is top notch! All car clubs are helpfull with people new to the sport and will show you what it takes to get your National race and rally liecence etc. Its simple and fun. Good luck to who ever comes into the sport , you wont regret it...

Yep, if it's an official autocross endorssed and covered by Motorsport NZ you need 100% cotton overalls and a helmet.

Strictly speaking a car only has to be WOF-able, not actualled WOFed (but that's up to the organisers) for autocross. The main things of concern is brakes, seat-belts, and a safe interor.
Tip: make sure your battery is tied down properly as well - not actually a WOF failure point, but it does need to be reasonably secure for motorsport (ie forget bungy cords ).

You can do events without a civil driver's licence at the organisers descresion (if it is on private land); and you can do events underage with your parents signed permission (about 13 or 14 to 17 years old off the top of my head).

Why isn't NZHondas doing anything along these lines? Might be a reason to sign up for membership if they did...

there is lots of reasons to sign up to NZH great discounts on gear and special prices for trackdays, not to metion the t shirts and hoodies as well as a cool NZH Sticker.

This has nothing to do with NZH its MANZ Approved motorsport racing in new zealand

err.. i kinda meant why isn't NZHondas one of the clubs that gets into autocross etc? I think plenty of people on here would attend an all Honda autocross session. What does it take to be MANZ 'recognised'?

Theres no reason why NZH couldnt have a Gymkhana. I'd sure as heck help organise and attend them. They dont have to a MANZ approvial. It would be a prick to get NZH as a MANZ registered club and it wouldnt be easy at all. Its just as easy to join your local car club man

You need to be an incorporated society to become MANZ affiliated. Something that is in the pipeline for this year.

Until certain members of this club can stop posting crap on these forums about wanting somewhere to have their illegal drags or burnouts, then MNZ will never take NZH seriously.

Shame, so few can ruin what so many have tried to lift and promote this club to a higher level.

I'm liking what STR8LN said, if that happens then i'll sign up for membership on that very day.

Tysonzane, i'm really keen to try the wagon out at a Gymkhana... Want to try your hand at organising an event? I'd be happy to help in any way..

NZH shouldnt do full motorsport events, only trackdays.

It would be good for more trackdays like Manfield and taupo and even drags down lower north as well.
