What exactly does that do? I know you get more power, or at least I think you do, but why isn't it set at this from the factory?

I'd suggest to everyone thinking about increasing there timming not to!
First of all they are quite advanced factory due to a better fuel in Japan.
If it pinks you could find youself up for a rebuild.
Imagine hitting the tops of the pistons quite hard with a hammer.. well thats what pinking does.

Well, I advanced the timing on my B16A by two degrees in about October last year and have been running it on 98 RON fuel ever since. The car is driven 7 days a week and I hammer the ass off it on a regular basis with absolutely no detonation/pinking problems at all.

If you stay on 91 and advance the timing then yeah... you're asking for trouble. Move to a higher RON fuel and it should be all good.

Tech Gods? Cement? Gansan? Comments?

they are tuned for 100RON gas in Japan, so it all seems a lil iffy!
but me and Vent are both trying it tonight, so we shall let you know

Vent/GR81: If you're not using a timing light, exercise caution when adjusting your distributor.

Vent: Let me know how it goes. Borrowing a timing light shouldn't be a problem, but the guy I'll be borrowing it off knows what happened to the last one I had so... yeah. Heh heh.

Hint: Don't leave expensive tools/equipment lying around on the garage floor when you're moving your car around. Duh.

My car was pinking, took it to the best garage in town (who ironically im working for now) and they advanced my timing 2degrees and told me to run on 96 octane - problem fixed..

Hmm what if you have a Apexi AFC on you NA car and advance the timing. THis way you can give it more fuel...

I have a timing light if you guys want to do some tuning before the drags... I will do it for you
We are advancing the GTi before the NATS, and he is now running a S-AFC, so we will see how it goes.. not sure how they work with ECU control over Timing..
The Skyline Retards after it heard detonation..

All in all, it went very well. I marked the original position on the distributer with a vivid, undid the 3 bolts, rotated the distributer 2mm anticlockwise, tightened the bolts, and wooo :

- engine sounds gruntier (dont know why? )
- no more "mini rumbling" backfires when decelerating in 2nd
- notice a wee bit more pull in 2nd and 3rd in low revs.

I tested it was ok, but driving up a medium slanted hill, using 4th in parts, at 2-3000 rpm.. no pinking.. i figured that was about as much load as i could put on the engine... so all is well...

I did exactly the same as wot Vent did, except i advanced mine by about 4mm +/-
doesnt pink, and have a lot more down low, and it revs soooo smooth

will do it with a timing light tho, just to make sure

Not dead certain but aren't most cars tuned to run on all kinds of fuel so they em tune for like the lowest quality fuel to avoid detonation, or does this not apply do JDM cars where they know what fuel they'll be using, rather than the export market..?

Funny, I was just going to ask if there was anyone in Wellington i could borrow a timing light from.

I'm going to try advancing mine a bit - my car seems slower than it should, and the next item to eliminate off is Timing (already removed cat, new air filter, fuel filter etc). Might just do the old "turn it 2mm" thing tonight and see how we go

B16a owners - make sure you bypass the ECU (paper clip in green plug) and warm up the car to normal idle before you adjust the timing or else the ECU will just retard it back.

Same goes for B18C people and i guess H22A people as well, wen you do it, the engine check light should come on and stay on..

As for where this green diag thingy is, on a DC2 its under the glovebox on the passengers side, you cant miss it

Same for the DA6. If you're not sure check the Helms.
