Tony's Nissan Onevia

Well, about 14 months ago i bought this rough piece of drift car. I bought it because it's cheap and if i end up writing it off on the track, it won't be a tragic loss. And there are other nissans that alot of the parts will fit on, they are interchangable like lego. My goal with it mainly is to keep it reliable for me to learn to drift with at drift days on the track. Mainly taupo.

Started out with a blowen head gasket, 15" 4 stud pulsar wheels (that were soon painted matt black), no seats, etc etc. It did however have a few good things going for it. A nice set of HKS hypermax adjustable susspension, a mint s15 t28 ball bearing turbo, some good stainless intercooler piping/intercooler etc. An aftermarket bolt on exhaust, dunno what brand, and a roll cage. The lame part about the roll cage is it is just outside of spec for being homologated. It has a little bit more crush on some of the bends than is allowed. Not too worry though if i get good enough to actually enter events i will replace it with a roll cage that is able to be homologated.

When i was replacing the head gasket, torquing up the head one of the head bolt threads stripped. Not really wanting to helicoil it, i decided to just get another engine around christmas time.
Here's a few pictures of when i first got it:

Too much to drink and a roll of red tape = A team van scheme!

I put the new engine in, replaced the clutch with a heavy duty excedy 5 puk item, replaced the fuel pump with a walborough 255L item. Painted the inside of the boot matt black, made the battery secure in the boot.

Woodstock window squirters!

Installed a 38mm DSR wastegate and a turbosmart V port B.O.V and a gizzmo electronic boost controller.

Installed m&h drivers seat and monza 6 point harnesses, a bigger radiator.

Converted rear to 5 stud using a 300zx carrier and re-drilling standard disks to 5 stud.

And i bought a few sets of shitty curbed 17" wheels. I have one matched set of bbs's that i bought for $250 with some mint eagle F1's for up front. And i bought a mixed set of 2 different types of wheels for $250 with no tyres. The widths are 9.5" and 7.5" for the bbs's and 8.5 for the mixed ones. I mainly run r17 205 triangle tyres because they are cheap.

Sent it over to speed factor in jan to get a few things sorted and it tuned, the engine ended up having a bit of a noise in the bottom end. So new big end bearings. And back to me to run in for a few hundred kms before it can get loaded up on the dyno.

Lance driving :

Run 400km's up quietly on some country roads round my house and took it back to speed factor for a tune.

185.2kw @ 10psi not bad for a little 1800, 593nm of torque too.

From there i installed some electric radiator fans, aftermarket adjustable rear camber arms, front castor, and rear toe arms. Converted the front the 5 stud and added gts-t skyline disks and 4pot calipers.

Took it for a wheel alignment and headed out for my first outing on the track!

YouTube - S13 Onevia drifting

And a few cameo appearances in this video

YouTube - drifting with cory sharp

It was an awsome day, spun out heaps, crashed into some tyres ounce, split the front guards a bit, nothing major! Learned heaps and can't wait for the next one on august the 3rd. Still got a long way to go before entering a competition like d1nz or nz drift series, alot of practice!

Things to do before next outing:

Fit oil cooler

Re: Tony's Nissan Onevia

Thanks for the comments guys.

Fitted the rear sway bar and 4.3 locker yesterday, going to have a crack at fitting the oil cooler today, hopefully the lines and everything fit. I have just got strait fittings off the sandwidch plate so hopfully they will work otherwise i might need some 90 degree's.
Ugh and a found one of the exhaust mounts broke off at the weld on the back muffler from the last track outing. So im going to take it into work today and weld a patch onto the muffler and then attach the mount to that. I hate welding on this stuff like this, im probebly just going to make a bigger hole than the origional :p

Not as yet, was going to take a few photo's today but didn't have any batteries for the camera. On august 3rd at taupo i'v got a few mates coming down that will be videoing, and i should have a mounting on my cage for my video camera by then. Hopefully we will get enough footage to make a decent 3-5minute video or something.

I welded up my broken exhaust mount today, it was messy but it worked, didn't blow any holes in the muffler. Dummy mounted the oil cooler, it's going to sit right in the middle of infront of the intercooler. Still far enough back to be protected from stuff i'll probebly crash into though!
Mounted my sensor for the water temp gauge in the thermostat housing. And mounted the black faced gauge in a custom chrome...........Towball cover! Haha, yeah well a chrome gauge cup is $20 and a chrome towball cover is $3 and they are pretty much the same size, shape, and colour

Will have the oil cooler in properly tomorrow so i'll be able to take it for a little blast up the road, and see how much understeer i get with the locker .

Re: Tony's Nissan Onevia

surely mounting it off to the side of the FMIC be a better place for it? wouldnt obstruct as much air hitting the intercooler
Certainly will be interesting with the locker in there
I see your running 10ish PSI, do u run abit higher on the track or is it still on stock boost??

Yes it would be best to mount it to the side, i'm a little restricted for room though. All my intercooler and radiator are shifted back a bit so if i hit something at the front they dont get destoryed. Im mounting the oil cooler back behind the bumper iron as well. To give you an idea, the oil cooler is getting mounted on the bottom radiator support, and the intercooler and radiator are back from that. The oil lines are alot thicker than i thought they would be too so that sort of restricts where i can put it, as they are not that flexible.

With the boost, it's tuned for that amount of PSI so thats where i leave it. It runs a s15 t28 turbo, so even at the low 10psi it is still putting more air into the engine than a standard t25 turbo at 10psi.

I dont plan on changing the tune, the power is enough to learn with, and i just want to keep it reliable.
If i did want to cram more air in i would need bigger injectors, and then more than likely a bigger air flow meter, possibly an rb25 one, and then some ecu tuning for the different air flow meter. And ofcourse dyno tuning for the new modifications as well.

Nissan lego ftw!

I *think* I still have a Z32 one lying around somewhere if you're interested - was gonna put it on my 180 but Ive got an HKS F-Con now which is map based.

Hey thanks for the offer. At this stage i'm just gonna leave the thing standard for reliability. Ounce i'v learned the art and if i want to be compeditive i think i'll build something nasty up from scratch. I love the gangster sound of a 6 cylinder, especially the rb26's. Might build up a rb26 cefiro or something d1nz 2004/2005 styled! I'm going to have to go work in the mines in australia to pay for it though

Haha sludge pumper! Yeah people say that it messes with the balance etc etc, it's something i'd really be interested in seeing the difference. But dont really want to spend all that money just to find out. And it's not like anyone would let ya take their car for a blast around the track (Not that you cna blame them!) Ah well, will find out one day!

Taupo drift day cancelled, at this stage they are looking to organise one for the same day but at meremere. So the next drift day at taupo is the 17th.

Re: Tony's Nissan Onevia

Went drifting yesterday at meremere. Was a pretty good day, had a few niggly little things that popped up. The idle control screw under the throttle body butterfly kept creeping up, i'm guessing the nut fell off so we lock tighted it, deformed the thread and set it at the right level. My gizzmo EBC is playing up so i just had a vacume line going strait to the wastegate to run 10psi. Throttle was sticking so we fixed that.

Then towards the end of the day i spun out at about 120 and hit the armco! We were told at the start of the day they have had 3 cars written off on the armco down there, and one guy has broken vertebrae in his back etc from crashing there, probebly would be here if the car he was in didn't have a cage.
So we were allowed to drift down there, but at our own risk. It's kinda lame because the further you get down the track you seem to get into a bit of a rythem, and with all that wide open track in front, you just want to keep going!

So we got out the big hammers, the cable ties, pulled my smashed light out, beat the bumper and radiator support back into place a little, cable tied the bumper back up, and pushed the guards back in a little bit.
Then went back out again. Did a few runs and then the clutch started slipping when ever i would hook 2nd. So decided to call it quits at about 3.30, the day kept going till 5pm.

I'v got another spare clutch so that's no worrys. It's going to interesting to see what needs straightening when i get the guards, bonnet and bumper off. The bonnet hinges seem to be a tad bent. Not too worried though, it's mainly cosmetic!

Heres a few pictures anyway.

Havn't loaded any vid's up yet, have one of me doing doughnuts round a cone and one of me hitting the armco, all the rest were from the start of the day and im just spinning out all the time. Sucks we didn't get any footage at the end of the day as i was starting to get good, could link a few good figure 8's in a row. Or swing it out side to side in 2nd all the way down the strip with out spinning out.

I'll get my mate to bring it down on sunday morning of nimm, going to be racing the eg6 at the track day, and drifting this on the sunday. It's nothing special, just a rough as guts drifter. Don't like trying to grip race the onevia, it's lame, i always want to kick it out sideways!

Re: Tony's Nissan Onevia

Just pulled the guards and bumpers of to have a look at the damage, and straighten things out.

Most of it's the bumper iron, some around the radiator support that is going to get dealt to with the sledge hammer.

Next event is monday october 27th, labour day at pukekohe in auckland!
Specatators $10. Might be my last event in the car before selling
