EF Race Car build thread (Car back on track 21/9)

[This thread was just for my traction bars but I decided to make it into a thread for the whole car]

Okay so I looked up the Full-Race website for a set of traction bars for my EF drag car and saw the price of $450US I was like yeah, okay. Then of course there's the exchange rate which works out to be around $725NZ then you add freight, customs, GTX/tax on that and I thought nah fuck that shit and made my own:

Started off boring the factory tow hooks and tacking 1.5" chromoly between them:

Then I whipped these bad boys up at work. 1" chromoly with 4140 tapped ends. 12° taper with a 10mm radius - ala NHRA Funny Car stylez 8) 12mm rod ends.

And I spent most of tonight fabbing the brackets that complete the deal:

The semi-finished product:

Tomorrow I'm going to have a go at mounting my intercooler with the remaining chromoly (I also have some 3/4") and also some supporting brackets from the 1.5" moly to the factory crossmember holes.

Then it'll be fully tig welded by someone whose better then I am at mig welding

I also need to get my spool finished, get the box back together, get the box into the car and see if it fouls on my new trailing arms ops:

I'm going to run 26" slicks so raising the suspension needs to be done but with the weight of the box off the car it lifted up enough to replicate a 1.6-1.7 second 60ft

Ronnie Lim ran 26's, then finally stepping up to 28's. The Rothery (spelling) brothers GTI Pulsar runs 26's.

I want to trap 130-135mph, which on my standard revlimit and gearbox in 4th gear can only be done on 26" slicks.

Until I build a motor and head capable of going past 8200rpm, in which case 140mph is only 8500odd or so.

And for shits and giggles, 10,000rpm in 4th on 28" slicks = 177mph

Front engine mount is gone, I'm probably going to make the remaining 3 solid mounts, well solid..er

I really would not know if it was street legal or not, I don't see why not?

Modding the crossmember/engine mount its a structural component of the car ,it may be certifiable. Always scared me away from buying one. Not going to be a street car anyway is it?

Oh yeah, never thought of it that way ... I supposed for a street car you could get/make some nolathane bushes to stiffen things up.

No, this car will be strip only 8)

Still needs brackets for the radiator and bits that go off to the factory crossmember bolting points.

They hold a special place in my heart, that's why they are in the background keeping an eye on things 8)

I've got more tubing to bend up and mount for the bonnet support (I've cut all my headlight shit out) and then there's the CF bonnet to get which will come after the turbo.

Hopefully by next month.

So I chucked my gearbox back in tonight only to find that the driverside trailing arm fouls on the gearbox. Balls.

I thought it would but meh, going to have to go 4WD style ride height in the front anyway.

Turbo will be here later this week and then probably next week I'll start work on the manifold.

Going to have the battery infront of the passenger wheel so need to fabricate the bracket for that.

There's no steel at work that tax to make my spool so I'm going to have to order some in ( ) but that's not a problem because it will still works out to be cheaper then buying a spool from the states or getting one made here.

I was planning on stripping all the interior and engine bay and repainting but it's quite a bit of effort involved in using our rangi sand blasting unit so I might waterblast it and give a light spray paint over the top so it no longer looks white/oversprayed yellow + cat piss.

Then hopefully if my CRX sells then I can get stuck into the new ECU and fuel systems and some slicks and then she should be ready for 1/4mile passes and general abuse and explosions and bangs and whatnot and shit 8)

Yep, for those with street cars (unless something's changed in the last year) this would need certified as it changes the crumple zones.
