| This is odd.
As far as the supermarket goes, they're getting their $5 for their broccoli, I wholeheartedly believe that its' NZ's classic "tall poppy" syndrome at work again.
At my place of work, a department store, we often have clearance lines, ie $200 items for as little as $40. Just recently, one of my workmates purchased around 10 of these $40 items; and it was a manager that sold them to him.
He put them on Trademe, tends to sell them for around $200 a pop. Not long after, he was rung by the company management (ie, head office!) and was berated for not acting in our stores' best interests, and was given a written warning! He refused to accept it, and eventually had it reworded (3 times!) so that he took as little blame as possible.
Basically, head office said that our quit cycle process is such that we need managerial permission to buy in bulk like this, moreso with a managers' permission. Except, it was a manager that sold him the goods.. so how was he at fault? The store couldn't sell them, they were on quit cycle, and he was paying the asking price.. with managerial permission. But he still got in trouble. Its' a bullshit policy no matter which way you look at it.
I was told of another staff member up north, who also did the same thing, except on a much larger scale, she purchased basically all clearance items, and onsold them via Trademe. The police were involved, but no charges were laid, as she had broken no laws. I'm not too sure wether she's still with the company though.
Soooo..
Its' a case of, "we'd much rather sell this stock to 50 ordinary NZrs than sell it all to one person". I don't understand it. They're getting what they want, shit, they're getting rid of it all at once, no need pissing around with shrinkaging perished stock.. but its' still a problem. The only thing I can see against it is that usually if you advertise an item, by law you have to stock it, and selling it all to one person would open the company up to complaints to Consumer Affairs from people who missed out, and a potential fine of thousands of dollars!
But in this case, its' just a simple case of mistaken identity. Their loss, by all means tell your "community" not to buy there, because thats' about all you can do.
Man, NZ really does suck sometimes. I often wonder why people come over from Asia/India to settle here, with the amount of grief they get.
