    Stolen cars

    Hey,

Lets face it, there has been an increase in posts about stolen cars. Is there some way we can track the type of car and location so members or potential buyers etc can see what type of car is most popular with theives and which area is racking up the highest stolen car count??

I understand this kind of data gathering is something the police are/should be doing but why not have a go

We could learn lessons like theives are moving on from stealing DC2s to DC5s, or they seem to target cars in howick that never get returned whereas in west AK they take joy rides.

    Just an idea

Theives are everywhere!. It don't matter what type of car you have, you need to do whatever you can to deter/prevent your car from being taken. Use your initiative and common sense when parking places etc.

The AA i believe does a count of the most stolen types of cars and has an annual report, its not just for hondas though.

You can use this website and search your area it will give you a small idea of whats been taken

    Re: Stolen cars

Thanks, havent seen that spotter website before

I was thinking very similar but at more of a grassroots database. We can track trends in where theives are stealing from and what cars they are aiming to take. Not just creating a list of stolen cars in Auckland (like spotter) but breaking it down into suburb level. And not just finding the most commonly stolen car at an annual level (AA), we all know silvias are going to top that list so its nearly useless information. I agree that we should always take precautions when parking our cars to make sure theyre not stolen. But if we can see that theives have recently been going to a certain suburb, that the number of cars stolen there has increased in the past 3 weeks, we may choose not to go there at all or we may choose to take the boring daily car instead.

When posting a Stolen thread we would only need to ask a few questions such as:
Which region was the vehicle stolen?
Which suburb was the car stolen?
    Make?
    Model?
What makes your car desireable? (e.g. wheels, stereo, radar detector, seats)

And we can count the hits for these questions, plot graphs and determine where theives are going, what vehicles theyre taking and even determine trends in the demand for stolen goods. If we can see lots of recaros are being taking, we may be inclined not to buy recaros?
Yes, I understand lots of theives are opportunistic, but some are not and trends may still arise. In environmental studies we call it self-organised patterns

    Too hard to do?

Seems like an easy thing to do to me

    Re: Stolen cars

The thing is how many people are there actually worried about it? yes we all know cars are stolen and its part in parcle of owning a modified car. but to the extent your talking? not many if any as my brown brother scribe said.

I know cars are stolen and im aware of it. but like people have said i do everything i can to make sure its not mine that's stolen.

People already do what your said
they post the area its stolen in, region isnt hard to work out from the area
they post the make and model
they post photos and a rego. what more do you need/want?

Feel free to do it on your own accord, but its not something we as moderators are going to do, its to time consuming on top of everything else we do.

and remember for every thread that is put up here about a stolen car theres probably 50 that arent posted (not hondas etc) so what you propose isnt exactally going to help much. its not like its going to stop peoples cars getting stolen

    Re: Stolen cars

    I cant see the point.

It would also provide the theives with information to change their behaviour.

    Re: Stolen cars

    Several things to consider:

    - Thieves also have access to the internet.
    - Thieves are known to browse NZHondas, and other car forums.

There is a fine line between fighting car theft, and making it worse. Not all criminals are stupid P-fiends, there is a percentage of car thieves who do it for a living, and may have international connections and a huge amount of resources behind them. If they do get spooked and feel someone is on to them, you can pretty much kiss any chance of seeing any part of your car again goodbye. Once parts are in a container and off overseas, that's an international matter, and unless it's part of a larger ring (i.e. the Arabic van operation) no authority is going to want to bother wasting time on it. That's assuming the thieves don't just freak and burn your car out. Cars that are marked by such people will pretty much go missing whether you like it or not, and its not just demand in New Zealand that will dictate potential 'trends' we see here. I don't think trends will arise at all actually. People can own a 'flash' car and live or move about anywhere. Besides, lets suppose you do form a judgement that thieves are targeting DC5R's in East Auckland to send the engines off to the USA, what are you going to do about it? Make them all sell their cars or lock them in a military spec compound, invest in $2000 security systems, or spend every moment of their life watching their car? It's simply not worth it.

If you are that scared of getting your project car stolen, buy a daily and fucking fortify your garage. A good start is to stop flaunting your car about on the internet, and unnecessarily around town...

    Re: Stolen cars

Plus i think they dont target a specific car anymore. If a customer needs parts for a car they will just contact theives and get them to steal it, since my mates 300zx almost got stolen but luckily the set off and thats not on the top stolen list, so anything is pretty much under risk but "boy racer cars" are under risk more.

    Re: Stolen cars

Cars are a portable possession. Hence their ability to be stolen. From some kid stealing your EX Lancer for a joy ride, through to an organised criminal group stealing high end cars to order - there's NOTHING you can do to prevent it happening. You may take steps to lessen the chance of the theft but you can't stop it if they want your ride. The only thing you CAN do is get a decent insurance policy to lessen the sting when you are the victim of a theft.

    Re: Stolen cars

Ive always wanted to know about Stolen Parts....

e.g. buying parts on Trademe... Is there really anyway we can check up if any of the parts we are buying is stolen? to be specific... Engines etc?

Are engine codes actually installed somewhere (police? carjam type system? where we can check up on them before buying? if your average joe cant do this, can or do the cert guys do this?
