Probably want to advise people to wear respiratory protection when trimming carbon. It's really really nasty stuff, similar to asbestos - normal facemasks don't cut it!

Depending on the resin being used - might want to have organic filters too...

That has yet to be proven.

For body panels I'd use glass mat with a layer of kevlar rather than choppy. Rubbing's part of racing and choppy stuff fractures easily. Kevlar allows for some elasticity when hit. Bending stiffness can be increased by using core.

Re: How to make fibreglass & carbon fibre race car parts

Vacuum resin infusion is the only real way to make CF look great. It provides the best strength and uses the minimal amount of resin.

If function over form is required, then the above methods will work just fine ...

Of course the vacuum method uses more parts and is a little more expensive, but check out the results!!

Re: How to make fibreglass & carbon fibre race car parts

Mate while I understand your desire to show bagging I honestly wonder how close posting this here is to hijacking a thread. Few home handy people will either attempt or really need vacuum bagging which is a professional/industrial method used where absolutes are being sought - like in the aircraft, F1 or racing boat scenes. Where on earth would they get let alone make a tooled mould from like that scoop? What I'm trying to do as a trade professional is not advertising, but rather demystify laying composites and encourage your average Joe to have a go at levels reachable, appropriate and achievable by them.
I'm glad it's doing that for some of you. Wait till you see how easy it is to make a boss custom airbox with great looks and function yourself in my next tutorial (currently underway). But I bet it upsets one or two "experts" too.

Re: How to make fibreglass & carbon fibre race car parts

Yeah checking the pricing and for an infusion starter kit you're looking at 300 GBP. Unsure if this includes shipping.
Sure you can probably source that stuff locally, but we all know how much NZ retailers like to price gouge, so unless you have a bunch of this stuff lying round it's going to be quite a significant outlay for one or two parts. Unless you're a running a composites shop, then you've probably got most of the stuff anyway and are not looking to the internet for how-to's
It's a cool video nevertheless though, always interesting seeing how stuff can be done.

I would scout local aero clubs as some usually make their own rotors and wings and buy carbon by the roll.

Sorry Bill, I didn't mean to cause any upset. I'm certainly a fan of your videos and can appreciate the time and effort you take to edit and post them.

My point was that to make CF 'look' good, then bagging is the better option. As stated in my previous post, if function over form is preferred then there is nothing wrong with doing it a non-bagged way.

I'm very much a fan of DIY, and giving things a crack for the sake of learning, I simply posted an alternative method of doing it for the sole purpose of aesthetics ... no harm in that.

You're forgetting that pre-preg has a more precise volume fraction and can also "look great"

really nice man, ive always wondered how certain things could be made, would never have thought to use the simple things you've used. Keen to try my hand at some fibreglassing. May do some more reading and annoy the likes of BUMP etc for tips
