    Demolition Derby

Anyone done any speedway racing or demolition derby's?

Couple of guys and I at work are thinking of throwing together or buying a car to do the big annual demo derby at Waikaraka park.

I've started to have some reservation about driving in it as the cars aren't well protected. All you have is a single vertical bar behind the drivers seat and an optional bit of alloy sheet metal as inner door skin. I dont think you have to have a proper race seat but this is something i'd choose to run.

I've had a few motorsport crashes, some at high speed, some not so high speed but they all haven't been very pleasant and something i'd like to avoid.

I guess safety is a big concern for myself particularly since you're not allowed to run a decent cage. Speeds are slower and they wet the track to reduce them further but there is still a chance of some very big knocks!

Other then safety has anyone got any advice on the type of car or driving tactics? .

Keen to hear from anyone that has done it or has had a friend/workmate/uncle that has haha.

Been a tough call if I want to hop in the car!!

    Re: Demolition Derby

Judging by the dates of the related threads, my last one was way back around 2004...

I went through Corollas, old Lancers, even an Avenger at one point. Funnily enough my best result (I think like 7th?) was in a corolla. I'm not sure how different the safety rules are for the cars these days, but it was pretty basic back then, but safe enough. Of course you get your share of smacks and feel a bit achy the next day, but spend a day strapped into a competition seat in a rallycar with the constant braking and acceleration and the next day you probably won't feel like you've just come out of a day spa.

On paper one of the best moves is to slightly pull up to the car in front and tap the rear panel sending them pointing towards a wall or someone else and causing the damage that way, without taking the brunt on your car, but good luck doing that lap after lap. Put the battery in the boot if you can be arsed, but chances are you'll expire from having no tyres left or a very empty radiator. I wouldn't waste a decent race seat in case it gets damaged or you catch on fire (jokes!... maybe!). And wear overalls, not your good race suit and helmet if you own one.. you'll look like the guy wearing a suit to a Metallica concert and just make everyone want to hurt you even more.

Oh, and find a super snipe if you can, those bastards were invincible.

Thats about it, if you don't want to chance being in a motorsport crash, even low speed, then you should probably shelve doing a demo derby, kind of takes the point away from it....

aim for their front wheels ... take out a tie rod or rack end, and doesn't matter how much panel damage you've inflicted on them.

I did one and its all pretty low speed stuff. When you choose a car make sure the dizzy is NOT pointing forwards i.e 4age. It is so much fun

definately need front wheel drive far better traction on soaked track,
fit the knobliest tyres you can fit under gaurds without rubbing
if you can find something carbed you will really reduce likely hood of going out early from something stupid electrical happening

Iv seen many flat back civics win demo Derbys, with chicks driving also. Take thermostat out for sure. Another thing Iv heard people talking bout is getting a car where the radiator is as far back as possible ie heaps of structure between front bumper & radiator. Oh also make sure u get something that was kinda serviced a couple mates hav lasted one lap & thrown a rod

we used to have our own annual demo derby for my mates bday in an old quarry on his olds farm, 15 odd cars racing around smashing into eachother was pretty fun , definitely FWD is the best in the wet muddy tracks , worst injury i ever got was whiplash and thats the worst any of us got and we were doin some nice speeds into eachother too
