Good for those in the states

Honda now offering body-in-white Civics with HPD racing components

There are few things more inspiring than a blank canvas, and Honda has recently given the company's enthusiasts just that with its new body-in-white Civic. The chassis is perfect for racecar builders who would otherwise spend plenty of time, energy and cost stripping out components in the quest for weight reduction.

Honda officially began selling the body-in-white Civic models in July, and the automaker has already delivered a handful of shells to licensed race teams. If you like what you see, Honda will sell you your very own stripped-down Civic shell for just $3,500, though don't expect niceties like suspension components or an engine and drivetrain. There's word yet on whether or not the shells come with a VIN, of course.

Honda has also announced that HPD will begin offering parts and racing components specifically designed for the 2012 Civic. The company says that the pieces have been crafted for the SCCA World Challenge and the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Expect to hear more on that front when the parts go on sale early next year.

You think car racing is fun... try going down a river stuck in a plastic tube dodging rocks... even I ask myself why

Its just a shell. Essentially no different if you buy a new one from the dealer and strip everything off it.

A dude at work has talked about some guy down south approaching Honda back in the '80's about buying an Accord(?) shell with no motor, etc, they did so on the providso that he cut out the floor pan (he wanted it for a fiberglass/light body shape to go over his full frame v8 drag car) and return that to them so he didn't make himself a cheap as chips brand new car.
I very much doubt that Honda will sell these shells with a VIN for this same reason, but you never know...

^The Rice Rat maybe? I tried Googling it to see who the owner was but about the only useful hit I got about it was one of my own posts on here. Heh.

They're both '90s. I'd say the Rice Rat would be the one, just waiting for some V8 dinosaurs to remind me of the guy's name.

Re: Good for those in the states

Honda Japan did something similar with the DC5's so people could build them for racing and for the DC5 one make series in Japan.

The cars were fully operational but just came with nothing in the way of interior etc. They were cheap too for a brand new car, like about the same price as a tidy DC5 currently is on trademe.

They didn't have the completion VIN thing so were a bit of a prick to register but a few people found ways around it .

The Accord hatch was built by Mike Nola and after going through a few sets of hands it's now owned by Terry Paterson in Palmy. Last seen tagging the wall at Masterton but it's been fixed now. Terry has run an 8.93 @ 151.49mph (243.8km/h) in it. The shell was indeed purchased new from Honda NZ after Mike sold his Mk 3 Cortina.
