    Clutch plate recommendations?

Well I tore up my organic clutch plate AGAIN at NIMM. I have a xtreme heady duty pressure plate and a stock replacement organic clutch plate.

Just wondering what people would recommend for street and occasional track use clutch plate.

    Full face carbon kevalar?
    6 puk?
    sprung centre or solid?
    3 puk?

I was never keen on too aggressive clutch as it is driven on street sometimes too. But when i track race it, it gets very high rpm down changes, and seems to tear off the lining. (Happened twice now )
I need to go easier on it me thinks (I forgot i had a weak clutch plate at NIMM and lasted 10 laps) oops

Ah ok cool, so handles very aggressive, borderline compression lock down changes on occasion? Any idea on price on one of those?

Yeh depending on how ruthless you are. Think I got a couple compression locks at Taupo the other day. I bought just the plate & dont quote me but about $250, it works out waaayyyy cheaper if you buy the whole clutch kit though

That the 6 spring Exedy Racing Organic clutch they sell? I'm running that atm and it's awesome, has taken a pounding and loved it. Sweet as for daily driving too just took a few days to get used to

    *Edited

Its still a full face plate not a 6 puk as such just has some of the brass button fibres woven in. 6 will destroy everything if a breakage happens

Hmmm well the full face riveted ones i just keep tearing off easily. I guess it depends on driving style I must be too rough for the full face as are many people.

I'll check out speed factor, BNT, xtreme etc.
Don't wanna spend $250 only for it to rip all the lining off again. Its not so much the material, but how its bonded to the clutch plate i think.

I only need the clutch plate not pressure plate

We've been through about 4 sets of exeedy 3puks on 3 different cars over the last few years. Always worked well on targa. Note you need the Japan made 3 puk, not the Aussie make 5 puk which breaks!

Slamming down so hard the wheels lock cause of motor compression. Ie dropping down a gear at 8500RPM Slows the car down reaallll quick

Hehe well these things happen. the 8500 shift or similar is what broke mine.I use an extreme pressure plate. Old style purple heavy dutyI woulda thought 5-6 puk woulda been a good balance between street and track.

U mean the clutch plate eating the flywheel and plate.Or if the puk breaks? It shouldn't brake like like full face do.I'll see what Evan has

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

nothing wrong with 6puk brass button xtreme clutch from my experience, only downside is that it does eat flywheel though due to brass material... the clutch pads on each of the puks can be replaced for not much from memory, its the clutch plate which is expensive that your paying for initiallly.

The puk style clutch eat the flywheel as mentioned so if you broke it yourl most prob need to buy a new flywheel. Depending on what flywkeel your running its another axpensive....

Man you guys must be brutal to be going through clutches on a circuit. Drags I'd understand, but circuit?

I've had the same clutch for about 5 years (Xtreme HD + organic full face) and have done tons of track days.

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Its more common to break them at the circuit due to down changes at high RPM.
Its actually quite common to break an organic clutch disc. I should know i've done it twice. Few people in honda cup have also.
Semi slicks, VERY late breaking and engine breaking on top, into 3rd, or 2nd. Them BOOM!

so if you broke it yourl most prob need to buy a new flywheel.
But would you break it? Must be doing something very wrong to break the puk ones surely?
I only run a cheap extreme pressure plate and stock ITR flywheel. So no biggy

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

I had never come across it before, but my exedy skyline one decided to let go around the springs.
The only time it had a hard time was when I dropped it on a brand new set of drag radials to get the shine off them, so I'm guessing that's when it happened.
I imagine compression locking could be putting similar sort of loads on the centre too.

    ^^^^ Thats nothing

Good point about breaking but even if you need wear it down & need to replace it. If your only running that setup then worrys I guess

A bit gutting that I had to throw away a basically brand new plate and buy another though.
I had planned on putting it in my other car until I saw that.
At least there is no chance of it happening again in my good car

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Ive done 20+ track days on my set up, just runs a stock ITR set up on a TODA flywheel, never had a problem, big downshifts from 9000 all day no problems at all.

Car is also doing 1.10s at puke so I'm not nana driving, have seen many exedy clutchs fail due to down shifting.

    Which one?

We've always run the 3puk japan made Exeedy units, and probably done ~300 stages on Targa across 3 cars, and 8 years, no problems so far, and they get 4k dump (or almost dump) launches by default.
