    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Ive done 20+ track days on my set up, just runs a stock ITR set up on a TODA flywheel, never had a problem, big downshifts from 9000 all day no problems at all.

Car is also doing 1.10s at puke so I'm not nana driving, have seen many exedy clutchs fail due to down shifting.
Hmm well i did around 10 track days and never blew it, then blew one. Then replaced did 1 track day fine, came to 2nd track day and it blew after 10 laps.
Stock ITR flywheel maybe changes it vs light flywheel? Also how fast you pull out clutch maybe, and rev matching etc etc. All down to driving style why i made mine last, then forgot i had to go slightly easier on it and blew it on friday.

This is what happens to em on my car

    Bought this today
Sprung 6 puk should be a good mix of race and ease of use

Either you are threshold braking or you aren't?

If you're already braking on the absolute limit then engine brake super hard wont do shit. You're already on the limit of your tyres grip levels.

Isn't that kind of surrendering the benefits of foot brake modulation to engine braking? You won't be slowing down any faster unless your brakes are fading/weak since your tyre grip would be the limiting factor.

It certainly doesn't result in quicker lap times. Just needless wear on the engine and driveline.

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Not saying I was compression locking or anything (may have nearly in the past done this at the track), actually just down changing in a race fashion, higher RPM etc. Organic disc tore up.

Anyways hopefully this 6 puk doesn't destroy everything :0 Lin was saying I probably needed an even heavier pressure plate to stop the organic tearing up. Hmmm Im not sure though, it already has an extreme pressure plate. I find those organic just like to hit the bump stops and tear up under high rpm downshifts.

Yeh for sure My theory is go out there going all balls out & improve from there as to going out been cautious & taken all day gettin up to speed with braking points blah blah hence lock ups & "crazy horse shifting" East coast yo!

I also stripped the lining of what looks like the same clutch setup you run. Most probably from aggressive down changing also.
Sounds like there is a few 'pro brakers' in this thread.
I know what its like when you are hard on the brakes and trying to get down the gears, to get around a corner that everything happens mega quick in a car!
Fuck knows how people get that rev matching sorted!!

    Practice makes perfect bro.

As stated before you'll just end up destroying clutches and you wont noticably decrease your lap times.

I've had an JKK heavy duty organic plate on a standard sr20det pressure plate and it held up ok... just make sure your heal-toe is smooth as silk.

Currently (as in installed it 2 hours ago) i'm using an exedy heavy duty cushion button. Hopefully it'll hold up to the turbo setup im doing.

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

I find clutches funny, one person says they are mint the next using the same says they are rubbish, ive had a variety of clutch from std, exedy hd to HKS Twin Plate.

I currently have a single plate and it seems to be fine.

Ive blown many clutches from being a rough cunt but one thing is, its cheaper to replace a clutch then to rebuild a gearbox, so its not always a bad thing having a weaker clutch.

Full face organic clutches dont hold at all, need a puk clutch.

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

I know of a few Honda cup cars using organic clutch. Its not that they don't hold as you could use a heavy pressure plate. Its just they CAN tear if you are rough as you say.
Smoother changes (rather than high RPM clutch out too quick as i did)

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

i just installed a 6 puck clutch from d1racing in my itr. Its not as bad as people think. I drive daily in traffic etc.. its easy to use but can pack a punch if needed. Id say its more controllable than 3 or 5 puck as i had 5 puck in my last teg and hated it cause it hops like a bitch if you aint careful with it.. my 2 cents

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Depends how heavy the pressure plate is with your puk too, too weak and it can shudder a bit.Why not use a carbon kevalr full face plate. hmm I was thinking that but was worried that would tear up just the same, couldn't get any info on them at the time and the 6 puk plate was 200 bucks!

Yet others have said they could hardly tell the difference between stock?
Hmm it must depend on pressure plate, flywheel lightness, friction material of the 6 puk, sprung vs solid. etc

I'll be sure to post here on how the ACT 6 puk is to drive. Maybe i shoulda got full face kevlar, but others said it can rip up just like the organic?

    Re: Clutch plate recommendations?

Ok Fitted the ACT 6 puk sprung centre clutch plate, can hardly notice the difference between stock. The slightest shudder is sometimes noticeable in 1st gear taking off, but hardly anything. Basically its REALLY easy to drive, little bit more bite when really changing hard.
I'd recommend it for daily with track use easily.

Here is pictures of what I found when I took the gearbox off
Stock organic clutch plate, used for 1 trackday.

    Flywheel, didn't bother machining

Clutch all back in, can see yellow ACT springs. Yes my purple pressure plate got a bit beat up from two organic plates self destructing on it
