Re: My pics thread help? 56k....NO NO NO!

Haha sorry, by saying my eyes are green I mean green with envy. Basically I am horribly jealous of your F1.8!

I have a Canon 20D, have had it for a good near 3 years. In replacement of my 50mm Macro I have the new Canon 60mm F2.5 Macro. I bought a lens the other day. The new Canon F4 17-85mm, was in need for a decent wide angle one as I can not stand the 18-55mm kit lens, the quality drives me insane! The only thing that annoys me that is it is only F4, but to get the extra couple of stops was going to cost me around another gran that I just don't have! I still love it though, produces some nice quality images.

Thanks Marc (BTW my name is HarriEt!)

and yes i do love that photo... i'm really thinking on getting a 80mmf/2.4 for macro...but my crown jewl that i will get EVENTUALLY will be the 14-24mm f/2.8G ED haha dreams are free...

    what lens/camera you have?
I would only go for a 14-24 if i had a D3, no point getting that lens without a FF camera, just get the 12-24, awesome lens, I would recomend the tokina 12-24 also, performs just as good but without the big Nikon price tag. you wouldnt really use f2.8 on a wide angle lens, im almost always on f8 for any thing wide these days. constant f/4 is enough, but a shallow dof on wide lenses dont really work for me

I probably would. If your shooting in really low light situations ie a theatre (experienced a couple of months ago), that extra couple of stops of light and shutter speed can make all the difference. I was without a good wide angle and stuck only with the kit lens which went down to F5.6/F4 (pushing it), I ended up using my fixed 60mm F2.8, just to get more light through, but ended up having to work twice as hard to try get what I needed into my scene.
Although if using F2.8 in these conditions, must be extreamly careful where you focus and make sure its sharp, in my opinion, manual focusing is the best way to go.

    EXACTLY my point !

i would hate to see my lenses walk out the door! Therefore, i would buy the better lens which i know i will need when i upgrade in the late future to Full Frame!! Any way... who says that it's bad owning something this good?? haha

many appologies about the quality, they are phone pxts, i have no idea where my camera is, probably in the car?

box brownie and an instamatix, with an old 4 sided flashbox infront

the one on the left folds out from a little box, lens is like a bellows
the right is similar to a box brownie but a bit more complex, you spin the two lenses on the front to get a zoom effect

left is a 35mm, unsure of who makes it
    middle is another box brownie
right is my first ever camera, a plastic fantastic lol, with a battery pack from one of my flashes behind it

yashica is my first slr, 35mm film and 50mm fixed manual focus lens. i used this all the way thru school and got an A bursary in photography with it. only other lens i had for it was an 80-200mm zoom which is in my camera bag in the cupboard. these 2 lenses got me through school and into a job as a cadet photographer with the local paper
the camera in the back is a pentax i think, with my first flash unit i owned, with a flash projector lens and a flashcard added, these belong on my other flash

    left to right:
dads old camera, 35mm random thing, still works too!
dads first point and shoot 35mm, next to another plastic fantastic lol

left is a fujica, my 2nd ever camera and a good little number, 50mm fixed lens and manual focus. it has my huge sunpak flash attached to it, with an external highly accurate lightmeter ontop. the flash is extremely powerful, used it alot for working in halls and open spaces, but its also good for close in stuff, bouncing off walls/ceiling/flash umbrella as the external lightmeter is VERY accurate

well those are my babies lol nothing younger than 15yrs easily
give me a good slow film (some decent colour slide film would be great), my yashica, sunpak flash and a negative scanner to input to photoshop and i could produce images almost as good as anything here

Damn!! All your camera stuff is amazing Marc!

(Im really into anything old and collectable)

Harriet has some old stuff too. One item is stamped 1892, I believe!

Stuff like flash powder, photo paper, films, kerosene lantern, developing tank and developing trays. She also has a couple of old cameras. One from about 1940 - 1950's and the other from the 70's.

    Very cool stuff.

Hope this isnt spamming your thread Haimsadia

Re: My pics thread help? 56k....NO NO NO!

lol many appologies for the spammage too

i used to have an entire old school b/w darkroom setup that i used. gifted it to my school when i left to show my appreciation for letting me slack about for a year doing what i loved.
i still have a box in the shed i found last week with agfa paper, film developing tanks, chemicals, filters and thousands of negatives. was good to look thru it all again for the memories.

id love to get back into some serious b/w photography with negs and hand printing every image again. guess ill have to hunt for a house with a sleepout or 2nd bathroom i can turn into a darkroom

    what is the teeth off

and with the flower one i rekon if your'd captured it with just the center flower unblurred it would look quite good ( looks good anyway )

the composition seems a bit off to me too jase, the teeth one has a bit too much going on, your eye isnt drawn to the subject, it floats around the whole pic. you could have done it with a different background and piss all depth of field, a wide apeture would have done that well, focusing on the teeth
2nd one has too much background blur too, you need to get in closer and cut out all the clutter of the background, or use photoshop to crop

x2 the bokeh doesnt look pleasing at all, the framing on the flower pic isnt working

makes my eyes sore trying to hold focus on the second one

I agree with the above comments also.

One thing I will add though is... I personally dont find the items very interesting to look at if you know what I mean.

If you can find an interesting item, it will draw the viewer to look at it and then the viewer can really respect the photography work gone into it.

come on guys, don't be so harsh on haim, photography does take a lot of experiment. i see lots of improvment since the first pic

anyway, here is my input haim; i m no master on bokeh but when i take pic i consider the dof a lot. i am sure you knw whats dof but very often ppl mis calculate the dof slightly and it will result unpleasing pics.

so, the faster aperture the shallow dof. ie, "ul l<dof>l lbackground"
its very important that the subject u want infocus are lyin inside the dof area. with the flower pic i think this is what happend,
"youl Flo<wer > lbackground" the flower wasn't perfectly inside the dof bracket?
