    Re: Joule's B18c EK3 track/daily build - IT LIVES!!!

Cheers all , just left that hose off and it runs perfect.

Very happy with the engine - haven't noticed any blue smoke.

Jesus christ it's loud just running straight off the exhaust mani (duh)!

Can confirm that it's not throwing any errors (yay me!), but we did notice the temp gauge on the cluster doesn't seem to do anything and the fan never came on, but this could have been due to the not so long running time (10min standing) / my big radiator (nzkw dc2 full-size) / both. (It did move up a little at one point but barely above the lowest marking).

I can't get over how different it is do drive. Not sure if I like the short shift on it, and I think I need the teg's master brake cylinder as the brakes are still rather soft after a good bleed.

And the hytech clone mani hangs rather low when it could sit a bit higher under the engine / chassis.

    So what's left to do..?
    • Need to put all the panels back on the car
    • Need to order twin loop exhaust
    • Need to take it down to some place and have a 2.5" exhaust made up for it
    • Cert
    • Wof
    • Reg

And somewhere in that list: get around to finishing installing my bloody sounds in my car (finally settle on tweeter location, cut some 6x9 supports out of mdf, and make water housing for front components so they don't get wet).

Didn't take any pics today but I did record the engine running for the first decent length of time, which I could upload if people want..?

Agreed there. UH is becoming more and more of a hole *blames prison*, but thankfully Whitemans valley is still a nice place.

I think a new location needs to be added to the list "Outside Upper Hutt", I'd pick that.

Small update of sorts; got a little work done last night after work. Finally bit the bullet and cut my rear interior panels so I can have them on while my 4pt rear brace is in. Also stole some of dads pink bats that he had lying around and used that to box off the insides of the rear interior for my 6x9's (has made a massive improvement).

    Re: Joule's B18c EK3 track/daily build - Running clip up

Yeah she goes alright!... except the radiator fan.

I'm almost certain that I wired it wrong and I have a feeling I *may* have wired it directly to the ecu bypassing the relay. I ran the engine for a while tonight after replacing the temperature sensor for the gauge with the one off the d ninja. I tested it while it was cold at it read 2k ohms, then after running my engine for a while until the gauge said midway (the fan should have come on by then), I turned off the engine and tested it again and it read only 90 ohms!

I have a feeling my cluster's temp gauge may be incorrect - I have never seen it past mid point no matter how hard the old engine was run.

Andrew (colgateam) is going to lend me his old cluster (he has an ek9 one now the lucky ***) for me to confirm if my cluster is F'd in the A or not.

Will also pull loom out and double check if I have wired the FANC in correct or not (good thing I didn't cover it all up just in case something like this happened!).

And finally, still have had no luck finding the top power steering bracket (even tried my luck at pick-a-part), so if anyone has a spare one for a gsr B18c send me a PM

Good to hear it's running man, have to take me for a spin too! With the power steering you'll be best off taking it to pirtek. Just get it cut and welded.
My power steering whines like a supercharger, does this make me a ricer?

Will be taking it for plenty of spins once I get it cert'd, warranted and reg'd. You will be most welcome to come for one.

I really don't think I have to do anything with my power steering, it all fits up perfect, just needs the top bracket which VTECKN is sending me.

Small update: Towed my car down to get an exhaust made up. They seem rather helpful and are going to give me a call once its ready and then sound test the different mufflers on it so I can choose my favorite

Yep any excuse for a drive! Need to get it certed, wof'd, and reg'd so I can start going on random cruses...

Me too. Missed class yesterday to tow car down. Really need to keep working on it and get it sorted quickly as I need it for certain days when I can't get a ride with the misses / steal her car.

Really happy with my new exhaust; its nice a quiet while cruising (no constant droning) and sounds great when your not! It all worked out in the end even tho I couldn't get a twin loop. Has a nice deep tone to it and no tin can sound

    Still/need to:
hose clamp the radiator hoses as the standard clamps don't seem to be doing their job well enough, sort out my fan issue and tidy+wrap the wiring, sort out the top left radiator stay, get my discs skimmed as the car shudders to a stop once they warm up , get a wheel alignment, wait for VTECKN to reply to my PM's and for the power steering bracket to arrive, cert, wof, and reg.

And once I have some more $$ - some rims!!

    Re: Joule's B18c EK3 track/daily build - Running clip up

Well I woke up this morning to a brainwave about how my radiator fan system works, and after a few minutes I had confirmed my "brainwave". First I went down to the barn and took the ECT switch off the old engine, attached it to my multimeter and submerged the bottom of it in boiling water and confirmed that it is indeed a switch and the thread on another forum I had read was wrong. I then tested the relay connectors and confirmed another part of my brainwave - there is a constant +12v feed into one of the switching prongs and the other side is switched by the ECT Switch independent of the ECU.

Knowing this I swapped the ECT switches over (just to be sure) and fired up my car. I let it heat up to the point where the fan should be about to come on and swapped my gauge cluster with Andrew's (colgateam's) one and also confirmed that my cluster definitely reads a lower temperature. And after another 5 minutes of waiting (past the point where I normally chickened out and turned the car off ) my fan kicked in!

I don't have any pics of my fan spinning but here are some pics of the new exhaust:

So that was early today / Thursday (for the exhaust), yesterday I took my car over to Mikes (my neighbour) to use his hoist and get the last of it sorted.

While I removed the loom to tidy the last of it and wrap it up, Mike was kind enough to heat wrap my headers (will post pics tomorrow)
We also changed the brake booster/master cylinder over to the one off the teg then had to spend quite a while getting all the air out of the brakes (there was a lot, and was may have been the cause of the shuddering while breaking but we had bled them before just perhaps not quite well enough). And finally once that was done we sorted the left radiator stay and the leaking coolant problems.

Hopefully the power steering mount shows up tomorrow (early Tuesday at the latest) as I'm planning to get my cert on Tuesday.
