RC 440's? If so as I *just* spent another ~$170 getting these ones cleaned and tested.
Only got these as I didn't want to pay the price of new RC440's.

    Damn my luck!

Don't suppose you have one of those pretty B16 fuel rails going cheap?

Right, went down to have a look at my now fully dried Skunk2 IM, and tbh I'm really not feeling the colour. All the previous cans of "Pot Belly Black" I purchased have not really been so pot belly black, but a lot closer to the original dark silver colour of another brand I can no longer get. I don't know if this is a case of the manufacturer tweaking their mixture, or me applying it differently. See here for a picture of the spark plug cover that came out the colour I wanted.

(Oh and those are not scratches on the logo, its just the protective plastic film I haven't removed yet).

    Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Prelude brakes installed

Been having lots of fun times lately...

Car had been intermittently jerking while travelling particularly while accelerating at partial throttle. Under full throttle it wouldn't jerk but felt hesitant / held back. After some research it turned out that the TPS was not calibrated. So I got out my multimeter and found idle throttle was indeed out at 0.52v and then dialled it to 0.48v (as I had read that was the correct voltage, but further reading after spending many minutes getting it perfect to 0.48v, revealed that it was actually meant to be 0.50v). Even at 0.48v idle, WOT was still reading 4.52v or something similar when it should have been reading 4.50v. Not to worry smanager came to the rescue - adjusting them at the click of a button from -1.21% to 101.21%. That problem solved...

But I had noticed the ECU throw an error code 13 (Baro sensor) earlier which came on again on the drive home yesterday and didn't go away till I got home and turned my car off then back on again. So further research revealed that it should be disabled on JDM ECU's since they apparently don't have them. So I went out today to find that it was already disabled!
So I enabled then disabled the check box, then re uploaded the map, and then tried to start the car, to find it throw an error 41 (Primary 02 sensor heater) and the car didn't want to hold idle.

So I loaded a fresh JDM P72 map, calibrated the TPS, and it started and ran fine, codes gone (for now)...

Not sure what's going on here, but something doesn't seem right.

    Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Prelude brakes installed

Trying to decide on a plan of attack at the moment for the next stages of this build, as I need it to get me from A to B every week day. Ideally I would like to rip the engine out and tidy up the engine bay (finish wire tuck, relocate battery into the boot, re-paint what was damaged when my wet cell battery leaked) among other things (the more the better). But I could settle for working on just the engine for now. So I have several options:
    • Buy another car to use as a daily, then work on that once this car is "done" - I would prefer a cheap old school Honda such an EB civic but didn't need heaps of work done, and was WOF-able in the mean time... (Does anyone live close to Motueka to check one out for me ) - Can haz my cake and eat it too?
    • Buy another engine and work on that, so it can be dropped straight in when completed
    • Buy another head now and get the work done to that (ported, port matched and polished, and all the bits installed) so only the bottom end needs work once the engine comes out - meaning less time I need to use my mates engine out the back of my barn for, before I install it in his car.

They all have their pitfalls, but mainly its extra $$ in all cases that I could do without the need to spend. This of course was all brought on by the super unreliability I've been experiencing of late which has been driving me mad. I think (wait - I know!) I would enjoy it more if it was all in pieces!

I'd advise against the first one, as you'll just end up throwing money at that one too!

That said, if you're set on buying a cheap daily I suggest getting something you don't like so that you'll spend all your time and $$ on the EK.

Another motor, pizza boy has b18c's for sale, perfect for ya, then at least you could sell on your current motor for the same price and thus not actually spend any money on extra shit you don't need. You have me for transport as I live down the road from him

    Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - ASR Brace Installed

    Small update

And its time for another small update. Finally got around to installing my ASR subframe brace today.

Decided to give the D clips a clean while I was at it, and also contemplated changing the colour of the sway bar to dark silver. Probably won't bother now I know you can't even see the sway bar when you're following me.

D clip dirty vs violently polished:

All installed and with plenty of lube:

A quick snap of the dirty whore at Jeoff's:

    Looks much better I reckon!

    Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Adapter Harness

As I think I have mentioned previously, I've been having intermittent surging issues most noticeable when under partial throttle. I have recalibrated the TPS and replaced the O2 sensor twice, which helped and made it much less frequent, but didn't stop the problem. So today I made up an OBD1 to OBD2a adapter harness so I could plug my old computer back in to see if the problem goes away.

The donor ECU was from Jeoffs (SiRge) mitsi mirage, I took to it with the cutting / grinding disc of my dremel and severed the OBD1 socket from the board. Next I tinned all the pins, then tinned and attached the first of one of many wires:

Some time later I had finished the "A" plug

While doing the "C" plug I decided to go the extra mile and keep the shielding around the Dizzy wires and earth it, even tho it probably would have made sfa difference over the 6-8cm of wire...

Since I had kept the shielding on the wires on the "C" plug, I decided to do the same for the final ("D") plug too.

Plugged it into my car and my OBD2a p72 ECU and it worked first time

I have also re-recalibrated my TPS to the correct 0.50v idle reading since standard ECU's don't let you compensate for any difference.

Will find out tomorrow (possibly tonight) if the problem still persists.

    Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Adapter Harness

Ok, so driving the car today with my OBD2a P72 ECU, its immediately noticeable how much smoother the car is to drive, and that the problem of intermittent surging has gone away...

However, on my way home tonight it was dark so I turned my lights on and noticed that an old issue I used to have where the dash and headlights run dim but normal under engine braking, has come back...

So I'm starting to suspect that I might have fucked up the engine loom somewhere and miss-matched a wire when converting from the bastard NZDM P2K wiring to the JDM OBD2a normal pinouts / wiring. Fingers crossed neither ECU's have been damaged by this, but its looking like its going to be a bitch to debug. Going to have to look even harder for a new loom now so I can get rid of this Frankenstein one and/or fix it.

Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Possible engine build cost

This is why you should never add up the cost of a build... $9k (and I'm probably still missing a few things )
I still have pistons, sleeves, and all the stuff in the labour section to go. Unfortunately getting this engine finished is going to be a bit slower than originally planned as I missed a few of these costs, and I'm probably going flatting soon. I am however determined to finish this, even if it does take longer than expected.

Question for others that have done this before:
I got the cost of Porting and Polishing from Kelford Cams site... $2k seems like a lot... Are there better value for money options? Or other companies worth recommending?

Re: Joule's B-minger EK3 build - Panel and Paint costs

So I finally got my A into G and took my car in to get quotes etc on the repairs of the damage done by the car wash, and touch ups of various imperfections all around the car etc, as well as painting and installing of the CTR rear lip among other things (see below).

The insurance total came to ~$1,100 (which obviously doesn't effect me) and consisted of repairing panel damage done to the doors, respray and blending in with the opposite panels (front and rear guards).

My private total came to ~$2,270 inc GST and consisted of the following:
    • Painting all bump-strips/mouldings (whatever you want to call them) minus the front bumper, to the same colour as the car: $410 ($50 remove/refit rear + $45x6 (front+door+rear x2) + $90 (rear bumper) paint)
    • Repairing my neighbours attempt at rolling my rear guards: $300
    • Bonnet respray: $240
    • Respray of front and rear guards to remove scratches: $520 ($130x4 which is apparently a little less since they are already blending those areas)
    • Painting & installation of rear lip: $330 ($50 fit + $150 modify + $130 paint)
    • Painting new front bumper (if I can get one): $220

Do these prices look reasonable? He said the cost of the rear lip may be less depending on how much modification is needed (mainly to fit the exhaust). Repairing my current bumper and removing the bump-strips would add another $300.

It pretty much boils down to a full panel and paint minus the roof and hatch. In fact it would apparently only be another $600-700 to do the entire car some other colour (but depending on the colour)... which I was thinking about doing at some point anyway...

I guess the engine work is going to have to wait even longer as I've waited long enough to get this done and I'm tight enough on funds already as it is.

Oh, and please note; I haven't been including the $ values of stuff recently to be a prick or for e-peen, I've done so for informational value (i.e. to those thinking about doing such things) / to get feedback regarding if the prices listed are reasonable or not.
