Yep seems its time I too make a "build thread" of what Ive been doing to my ek sedan.

Apparently a few people are interested as a number of chaps have been asking what Ive been doing to my piece-o-junk, some even think its a big secret Unfortunately I'm not that much of a douche bag to think that highly of it/me .

Truth be told, I'm part lazy and part short attention spanned... This is actually about the 4th time of done this but I kept getting bored and going out to the garage instead or to wongs pad to get some more scares FFS!

Right-o the car was pretty much finished as I bought it a couple years ago from Nate (nate_dogg). By finished I mean Nate had gone through the trouble of the motor/turbo/box swap & the previous previous owner, the late Ants Little (RIP, never met him but I hear he was tops  ) had the 98 spec brakes fitted at beyond.

Even though the main reason I bought the car was because it was done and didn't really need anymore $$ wasted on it...I changed a few things. Namely wheels, suspension, seats, wiring, pcv, fuel lines, steering wheels, mp3 etc etc. but it still didn't quite feel like mine ya dig?

    So a few pics then.

    HISTORY
This is the oldest pic I have of the car. The owner at this time was a buddy of mine, Dave. Some of the old dogs will remember him as "Cement".

The night I picked it up from Nate:

Always liked that pic... think its the wheels.

yep those are al-tit-za's, only the corners though

    Inside

    motah 1

    motah 2

So - fresh from a tune with the green tell-tale marks from TP the car put out:

169.8wkw with about 520nm of tq on 9.3psi.
The car then backed that up ~4 months later with 171wkw. This was also at TP during a nzh dyno day. The day was colder and the car was running slightly more boost because of it.

Drove it around for a while with a big filthy grin like this ->

The details are a little hazy of what changed first and im already burning out from typing so heres what I ended up with when I changed a few things:

    MY CHANGES

    New wheels + new drop

De-loomed + ps looped + braided bizzo etc

Inside new wheel + knob + mounted controller + mp3

Right so thats the car pretty much till I pulled it to pieces.
Dinner time Ill chuck some more info/pics up of the cars actual build in a bit.

Why the car came off the road:

My first 1/4 run at meremere. Was at the Jtune drags for Anthony little memorial. I nearly hit 100kph yeehaw!
The stock clutch had met its matched and died.

    and this:

Honda's can do skids Well technically the chassis rubbed and excessive camber started the skid just ripped it out.

So with the box out the engine was looking lonely so it went for a ride too.

    Taking the alu can out:

On the pit side for the bitch pin and underneath bits

    haha droop, what droop?

    Swap sides, getting closer.
Do we have to... yeah we have to...
Big thanks to the lads here Andrew on the right, Damion on the left

umm thats how we do it all day everyday

    tada

    Gearbox split and cleaned

Motor cleaned, took fuckin ages! I had a missing stud on the manifold and it spat shit on the block.

    more

    more

The dvm goodness has held up mint. Dave as put the flywheels on hold (probably indefinetly but I cant speak for him)

    Welding the bay

I browsed HT way too much and thought heh the engine bay dont look too bad already maybe Ill fill the holes and be like those dudes....
This was a big undertaking, way more than I had anticipated, looking back I dont know if it do it again was such a big job.
A big, huge, massive chur boy goes out to my brother-in-law (well close enough) Phil for welding the bay for me. He drove over a number of times from tga on the weekends to do it.
I would have loved to of done it myself but Ive got 0 experiance behind a welder and it didnt seem like the best job to "cut my teeth" on.
That said I did the grinding and he finished it off by linishing them flat.
I had about 4-5HRS just in grinding, dirty job The disk ended up about 1.5 inchs round lol

    So pics then:

You can see all the existing holes in the various pics of the bay.

So we started with the rad panel. The thought was if this turns to shit no problem well drill it out and replace the rad panel with a facelift one and scrap the whole engine bay filling holes idea, that shit rice anyway right !

One down, 44,000 to go, sweet baby jesus.

Right bloody rip in to it mate

Ok test time, Anyone spot the fuck ups here? Still not sorted but will do it soon. This was all me unfortunately so I get the dick head award here.

Around this time Katherine (thats the one that tolerates me... sometimes) decided to get into the groove of it... by taking the vacuum cleaner inside. Yeah I dont have a mrs willing to work on a car for me. Shes has a part to play later on

Whats a welder to do when its break time? I know make me look like a chump on my own bike...

    and he just keeps going...

big ass holes from looms a/c and more looms

    tacked up
The glove came about as Phil asked:
Phil: "hey bro where ya fuel?"
me: "umm haha right there man"
    Phil: 8O
me: ops: "its sweet theres only half a tank in it"
    Phil: 8O 8O
    me:

hmm have I ruined a decent car?

yeah maybe I have, oh shit haha

Oh nah sweet au cuz

So the holes are all welded shut and the painter is about to start his bit this week sometime. I dont have any pics of the bay in its final state. Some of the rougher areas in the pics posted were sorted later on.

    Brake lines:
    Eh this wasn't fun.
I didn't like the prop valve hanging out in the middle of the firewall so I took it to Apex brake and clutch to get new lines made up... you can read that shit here

After the saga that ensued there I ended up with this:

    go on get up there

    Dropped off, bye.

pics of the first round can be seen in the link above.

Much tidy-er on the second shot. Im still not 100% on them yet, I may have a crack at it myself.

This one has actually still got the old lines but it shows were the prop valve ended up.
When every things painted and installed they should be pretty unnoticeable. If they don't look to flash Ill rip em out and have a go myself.

    INTERIOR
Bugger all has really happened inside the car besides destruction.
The rear seat came out when I test fitted the new one as did the front seats when I put the new evo4 recaros in there.

Thanks to Wong (blazed_racer) for the new rear seat, db8r  . Just sitting there in these pics, fits better when properly installed.

The welding on the firewall started so the dash had to be pulled. This was actually a pain in the ass on my car as a few "extra" wires had been run through the dash frame which had to be cut so we could get it out.

Mark: This is pretty much where it was at when you asked me if I was in for the AutoSalon

    Question:
What do you guys reckon I should do with the dash? Since its out I wanted to do something with it as I cant see it coming out again in a hurry. Give me some ideas.
So far Ive had trim it, carbon it, flock it (rally car styles). Im not painting it and thats that!

    WIRING
I had previously attacked the cars wiring with pretty good results. That is except of course for the infamous starter motor mishap. I rewires the starter plug back to front. The shitter is it was in a pretty straight forward place. Was an easy fix, im just happy nothing went wrong in here:

Pretty old pic of the first loom. Long gone now.

I did the headlight harness ages ok but decided to redo them as I had a lot more experience now.

    Passengers side

    Drivers side.

Now its starts to get interestingly pear shaped
For some reason a genius Johnny mechanic had decided to use repco style plug for one of the oem plugs. So instead of the normal 14 pin plug I had an 8 pin and a 6 pin instead.

Wasn't much fun converting this back to normal especially considering the replacement plug I got was off an h22 (cheers Ian  ) so the colours didn't match up or anything. Anyway shes since been sorted.

Now for the fucking horrible bits.
Since the dash was out and there was no more ac I thought Id inspect the looms and just checkout what the state of everything was for peace of mind. I'm bloody glad I did cos look-y what me find:

This is the main power from the key down to the fuse block.

The black thing in there is a diode or something that never actually went anywhere... just had one end bunged into the solder.

Yeah the pics are shit but you get the idea. Theres an alarm, immobilizer and turbo timer in there.

What you cant see is that all that shit pretty much fell apart in my hands when I unwrapped the looms, yay

So I decided I'm either going to rip it all out & see if it can be salvaged or Ill just get new looms.
Not wanting to mis a challenge I got stuck in:

And heres the result. No alarm, immobilizer, turbo timer or gauges. Gauges actually weren't bad but I was on a war path and I want some new purty gauges anyway

So now the looms are au-natural. They still need to be fixed but the good news is they can be
You can see the engine loom in this pics going through the firewall. The black plastic braided stuff its wrapped in came from cableorganizer.com. Good fast shipping from these guys

Then moving on to the other side I find the main relay. Peel back the tape and I see this shit. I was like what the fuck!!. This thing literally fell apart without the tape on it. I'm amazed the car drove perfectly with all this shit.
If anyone can tell me what the hell that diode is doing there Id love to here it. Ive still not fixed this yet as I'm kinda putting it off.

Heh while I was digging around I found a present the original owner left me:

I finished the motor side of the loom to. I got an auto loom (Hayden, BTLF3D cheers mate  ) and stripped the auto stuff out of it and rejigged it so to speak.
No pics of that yet, maybe tonight.

    NEW PARTS
So Ive found that ordering new parts and opening the boxes is heaps of fun, way more than bloody wiring!
If you recall from the top the reasons for the car coming off the road were:
    • Clutch
    • Tyres
    • brake pads
    • ps loop

To date I have none of these parts... yes I am an idiot. Instead I have replaced parts that I already had and most of those were already after market, yes idiot is right.

    New suspension:

D2's. I have recently bought some zeal coil overs. If anyone wants these pm. They are in need of a rebuild.

Eagle rods... no the build is not just cosmetic

New throttle body. Stock b18c on the left new edelbrock 70mm on the right.

    Hey where'd it go?

    Just in case you forget...

At this point I need to say another huge, big massive thanks to Bunger, our new American user. Lee sourced me the matching plugs for the Throttle body. Thanks bro appreciate you going out of your way like that for me

In this shot you can see the fuel filter and associated fittings...
The filter was bought from HRP in Hamitlon and the fittings were bought from another place who I wont name cos the boss can deep throat me.

All of these parts were source from Eric @ Hybrid-performance If you want anything let me know happy to help and Eric is top notch

    NOTE:
Before anyone jumps on my nuts I tried to get these parts from local suppliers. The suppliers either didnt/couldnt/wouldnt get them or the price could not be matched. I went for the best deal I could get, no other reason.
