    CP9A Lancer Evolution V Build

I won't go into a big spiel as to why I bought the Evo V, love it or hate it here she is.

The day I got it, completely untouched by me

Started with cleaning up the boot, an owner at some stage had a sub and amp, I cleaned up the wiring into the spare wheel well and fixed up the speaker wiring that was held together with plasters.... Also someone had fitted a funky 3 point Cusco rear strut brace, first one ive seen like it.

    Before.

    After.

I open the glove box and this falls out.

explains why it runs a fully vent to atmo BOV with no stalling to running issues, sweet.

Poking around under the dash and these fall out.

boost controller and turbo timer. The boost controller has been turned off and the car has only been running .6 BAR (8.7 PSI) will leave it off until I finish off a few engine mods and get it tuned properly.

I moved the boost controller to under the CD player for better access. I was going to move the turbo timer there to but there was not enough space in the slot for both so the timer is by the drivers knee for the time being.

The exhaust consists of a HKS cat-back and some type of Stainless steel front pipe. There was a tag on the front pipe with SR and Jasma approved on it, bolts up the OEM dump pipe and has a flexi in it.

Al's Mufflers on the shore replaced the Cat with a straight 3" section, I could int get under the car far enough to get pics but heres the old cat out.

The HKS exhaust was in really good nick, only a few scrapes but no dents at all. I cleaned it up with some VHT hi-temp spray.

    Before.

    After.

Changed the suspension, It came with HKS Kansai Service coilovers that were way to hard and the fronts didn't go low enough so swapped them out for some K Sport coilovers, love them or hate them ive used them in the past and they are great.

    New suspension.

    Old rears.

    New rears.

    side by side.

    Fronts.

    New.

The kit came with new brackets to hold the brake and ABS lines in place (pictured above)

The car can go much lower, there is still about 3 inches in the rear (already just tucking) and about 2 inches in the front (also just tucking) damper ajustment is also much better, much smoother ride.

Old ones cleaned up ready for trade-me

Someone had replaced the headlight bulbs with some blue ones, these put out next to no light, so after some research I decided to get a HID kit.

    Kit in the box.

Kit after install, as you can see the ballasts are on either side of the bay, wiring these up was fairly idiot proof with plugs only going one way etc.

The light they throw out is unreal compared to normal bulbs, prob the best bang for buck mod ive done so far.

The wheels were not in the best condition, So I sanded them down, filled in the cubing and dropped them to Grant at GT Refinishes who's in the process of painting them white, unfortunately the blue sticker will have to go, its chipping off and will look like crap with the new paint.

    Cleaning the rims up.

The tyres are pretty stuffed to, one even down to the canvas so once they are painted permaisuri will be hooking me up with some Dunlop DZ101 225/45/17 before going back on the car for a wheel alignment.

Also will repaint the wheel nuts black to freshen them up.

Decided to do a bit of work on the exterior. Was after headlights similar to this:

So i picked up some black housing front corner lights and indicators.

will be painting the inside housings of the headlights black like the ones pictured in the red evo above.

Nice evo mate. I dispute your comment about it being completely untouched though - wheels, braces, boost controller, suspension...it's not exactly untouched

what I meant to say is that I had not done anything to it, that's how it was the day I got it, I think the majority of the work was done in its homeland, the previous owner didn't know how to use the boost controller so it was hidden away lol

keen to see how you do headlights... i wanted to do the same.

although i don't think the aftermarket indicators will match... I had the whole set of black house headlight on my evo 4 and just ended up using amber indicators (didn't even match the headlights that came with it).

new exhaust manifold, external wastegate, intercooler, cold air box, dump pipe, fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, Power FC up the boost and tune, maybe upgrade the stock turbo, 20G compressor wheel or something not sure yet.

yea Ive had a quick fiddle with them, the screw that holds them in place does not line up, however I think with some pushing it should work, will get some pics up later

Make sure you get a proper manifold with w/g port, not some crap DSR one.

Leave the standard ecu and get it reflashed or get an evo 7 ecu and reflash it.

Dont need to spend money on flashy aftermarket ecu's these days.

i really enjoy your build threads, always pour a shit load of effort into your cars, with huge attention to detail. wish i could get the opportunity to purchase one of them after all the nice progress, i know you sell them reasonably priced when you do and would be awesome to pick up a car that has actually been meticuliously treated and looked after. full credit, we need more enthusiests like you building cars that are actually worth paying for, not some back yard rocket scientist.

    cheers for that dude.

Polished up the HKS intercooler and intake piping, HKS BOV and ARC plate as best as I could by hand, the finish has been eaten into over the years from the elements, will prob just leave it as is.

The BOV return on the intake pipe had been blocked off using tape...so replaced it with a rubber chair leg boot from Para rubber and a hose clamp. Also plugged up the breather lines that went to the rocker cover. I had some stainless bolts lying around however they were a tad to big, with a bit of effort they screwd in and I chopped off the ends, came out looking rather nice and properly sealed, looks like they have been welded.

just been trying to find a decent manifold but not many around, plenty for the older evo 1-3. Not high on the list at the moment so no rush.

will a evo 7 ecu go straight in? what benefit does it have over the 5 one? wanted a FC for future proofing rather than being stuck with the one tune.

sign up on mmc, they've got heaps of info on the benefits of stock ecu's over aftermarket ones, but i'm pretty sure the evo 7+ ecu's are easier to reflash than the 5's

For a decent manifold i think your going to have to go see rsl or spec2 for a nice custom one that wont crack, will flow properly and will look the part. Trademe specials last all of 2 days.

If you wanted to be really really baller and money grows on trees in your backyard, head over to ams website and buy there turbo/manifold kit, fucken amazing!

yes the evo7 ecu will plug straight in, its just slightly more tuneable than the E5 ecu, however with the new evoscan coming out they are all on level par.

The stock is ecu is a lot more powerful than people give it credit for, you can do everything plus more than a powerfc and you can plug your laptop into the ecu and you can full access to it.

Be worth while ringing Kent and talking to him.

cool cheers for that, don't think I will change the turbo, the OEM one will make enough for the street and the odd track day, plus then there's the hassle of changing intercooler pipe, manifolds, oil lines etc etc, maybe upgrade the stock one in the future.

    TO DO LIST

    ASAP

Wait for wheels to be painted
    Fit/balance Dunlop DZ101
    Paint wheel nuts DONE
    Wheel alignment
    Paint headlights, fit indicators

    BODY
Find a Evo VI front bumper (spot lights not needed)
Find a bootlid without spoiler or garnish lights
find new drivers mirror (mines broke)

    MOTOR
600x300x76 intercooler (taken measurements and all will be fine with the existing pipework, will just need 2 reducers)
Dump pipe (I will be getting a external wastegate but this just for better flow out of the turbo)
Air box and intake (looking at getting a intake tube to run from the spotlight on the evo6 bumper into a air box for the HKS filter)
Fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator (just to make sure the motor gets enough fuel)
Exhaust manifold (not sure where/what yet)
38mm external wastegate (highly likely a Tial item, none of this cheap rubbish on something as important as boost control)
Up the boost with the boost controller and some form of tune

    INTERIOR

    Gauges
    Shift knob/Shift boot/Short shifter
    steering wheel
Reglue door trims (slightly coming away, have not seen a single evo where this has not happened)
New interior panels (steering surround and shifter console, been butchered with screw holes)
Fix dash light (one has gone out on the rev meter)

    POSSIBILITY

respay the whole car in the OEM silver colour
upgrade the stock turbo (as big as possible without having to change the pipework around)
    Cams and cam gears?
    injectors?

Oh forgot to mention. Got the windows tinted a few weeks ago at Hyper Drive in Penrose, 35% all round with a 10 year warranty. Was a good $100+ less than tint-a-car and the job was just as good. Just read magazines for 2hrs while the did it.

Also tried that UFIXA stuff on 2 small cracks in the winscreen, works amazing.

The HID is 6000k (will get some pics when its back on the road)

You can actually get a Garret turbo which is a direct replacement to the standard one, bolts right up, IIRC it can flow around 300kw.

yea the dashboard did put me off to but it grows on you. I doesnt feel as 'nice' or 'refined' as my old E46 BMW but its a hell of a lot more fun to drive lol.

Don't worry is off the road in a garage under my house, the previous owner installed a well known brand 5 star alarm, he even gave me a pro lock to.

Done a bit of reading up on the ECU, lots of people give the Evo7 ECU the thumbs up so I think that might be the go.

Got till the 5th april off so making the most of it, painting up the wheel nuts and some intake brackets today, will have pics later this arvo.

wow thanks. I never do anything outrageous like new motors, paint jobs etc just improve them a little and fix whats broke. Nice to see some people enjoy it, even if most of them are not wearing the H badge.

Speaking of old whores, saw my old Gloria JDM tank outside Hyper when the evo was getting tinted. Looked a little worse for wear, the front was all beat up but other than that still looked the same.

I personally think your doing the right thing here, when i get my next evo, prob evo 8 ill be reflashing the ecu.

I dont mind the interior myself, they were built for rally purposes.

    I love the interior/dash of evo 7/8/9's

will do, might be keen on the steering colum surround and shifter panels as someone had butcherd mine up with holes.

Spent all day painting the wheel nuts, AFM adaptor and the intake supports. What a pain in the ass those little buggers are, will end up getting munched when installed anyway lol.

Anyone know where to get a decent 17mm socket to do them up without causing as much damage?

Will get some pics up tomorrow when they are dried, will attack the headlights tomorrow. Im done for today got a new episode of The Pacific and Lost to watch
